Collaborative quilt
workshop with Koiné in Rio de Janeiro.
In early March 2010, we participated in a large exposition event
There was a lot more happening at this olympiad, and the etextiles workshop was
but a very small part.

Koiné space
This activity was within the context of a huge biennial exposition with 60,000 participants and visitors (pretty exact numbers as they clocked everybody coming in).
There were 4 pavilions, each the size of several football fields, and together,
the pavilions hosted almost 300 different spaces with emphasis on everything
from airplane building to fashion design; food preparation to medical equipment
manufacturing, cosmetics to education.

Day 4
The 8x8 quilt of interactive patches.
Some members of Koiné that helped make it happen.
With the venue finally empty, here's a video of the finished interactive quilt.
Forming clay pieces and taking shots for a stop-motion
film.
Claymation studio.
Relaxing a bit in the 'dog house' - a tiny, air-conditioned box.
Of the four
pavilions, only ours was non-conditioned, so we needed to build an enclosed
cubicle.
I must have lost 6 pints a day: it was
86F outdoors, and closer to 90F indoors.

The wasp that almost had its way with me last night. It makes a nice view under
the microscope, no?
Day 3
João Paulo explaining etextiles much better than I can!
After a few more patches, the quilt is beginning to look pretty good, and
attract a lot of attention. Each patch often has many authors, combining skills
and styles.

Day 2
We now have a few working patches.
Since
each one has a mimeolight, the quilt can be reprogrammed with a flashlight or by waving hands. Neat!
What I like about this type of work is
its collaborative and distributed nature: some people sew, some decorate, some
watch, some make suggestions, some iron. You see students, teachers and passers-by working and learning together.
30 minutes later, we can now add those patches.
Each patch has strips of
conductive fabric that makes contact with the power strips on the background
canvas.
We now have one finished patch, and several drying before we place them.
Day 1
Laying down strips of conductive fabric, after it has been cut and treated with
iron-on adhesive.
Prepping the background canvas.
Explaining what we're all going to do in this space.

etextiles, stop motion clay animation (with stage and cameras), music composition,
graphic design, etc.
